To remove the left position, you simply unpublish the modules in the left position. Forgive me if I misunderstood

I believe what the question was about what the PraisePosition tool.
When I view the front end template it adds [xhtml outline] to the end of every position name...which then wraps around and makes it look nasty.
What would it take to do a str_replace on names so that doesn't appear?

This is a core function of Joomla, so not something we can easily replace on the template level. You could edit your template.css and add

.mod-preview-info {
display:none;
}

but that div give some helpful info, so I'm sure you'd miss it.
